Commissioners discuss courthouse renovations

By Deborah Bennett Millen News Editor

Jenkins County Courthouse renovations were the main topic of discussion at a called meeting of the Jenkins County Commissioners held Tuesday, June 16, prior to the regular meeting.

Renovation plans discussed involve repair of the dome, roof and HVAC system.

Architect Bernard Martin pre- sented five construction contract bids which were opened June 9 with Dabbs-Williams General Contractor being the low bidder at $451,400. Numerous items concerning the bid were discussed as well as financing of the repairs. It was noted that $528,000 has been set aside for courthouse renovation in Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax V funds, but it will be necessary to use surplus funds to complete the project.

Commissioner Pam Dwight addressed the group concerning Vernon Edenfield and his expertise with the renovation of historical buildings.

Following the meeting, Mr. Edenfield met with the group and shared some of his historical knowledge of Jenkins County and the courthouse. He also shared his experience in restoration of historical buildings during his career, stating that he would like to be a part of the courthouse project working from a "complete set of plans" in hand before restoration begins.

The commissioners expressed appreciation for Mr. Edenfield's remarks and interest.
