County commission says 'no' to requiring advance notice of grants
Agencies and organizations seeking grants that require matching local funds will be able to continue to seek those grants without having to give the county advance notice. The Jenkins County Commissioners recently voted against a motion that would have required them to do otherwise during the Aug. 4 meeting of the group.
The issue was brought up by Chairman James Henry who suggested that local agencies intending to apply for grants requiring matching local funds notify the county and receive up-front approval so that the matching funds could be included in the county's budget. During discussion of the matter, Commissioner Thomas Lane suggested that an alternative way to handle the situation would be to include $60,000 in the county budget, $10,000 for each volunteer fire department. Chairman Henry stated that this could be considered when preparing the 2010-2011 budget.
The group then voted against a motion made by Commissioner Pam Dwight and seconded by Chairman Henry to include within the county's Purchasing Policy a clause stating that advance notification of grants requiring matching local funds was needed. Commissioners Lane, Domingo Green and Floyd Chance opposed. Commissioners Henry and Dwight voted in favor.
In other matters, Chairman Henry informed the board of the electronics recycling day that was recently held in Richmond
County and recommended that Jenkins County plan this type of activity. Commissioner Lane was requested to gather information and report back to the group.
Field Director Grady Lane reported on repairs that were needed at the Jenkins County Memorial Library, Jenkins County ASCS, Jenkins County Health Department, Jenkins County Senior Citizen Center and Headstart buildings. The commissioners instructed that bids for repairs to all of the buildings, except the Senior Citizen Center and Headstart building, be advertised. There was general agreement among the board to offer the Headstart building for sale to the organization that currently leases the building.
Other actions taken by the commissioners included the following:
• Approved the purchase of an Alamo Boom Cutter at an annual lease/purchase cost of $17,757.80 with the lease period being five years;
• Approved the LARP road list for 2010;
• Approved the part-time employment of Otis Dailey, community service supervisor; Tisha Robertson, meals van driver; and Jill Clayton, backup driver and clerical; and
• Approved the #1 logo to present Jenkins County for all purposes.
