This colorful Luna moth was discovered recently by Helen Boone on her lawn. The Luna moth has a wingspan between 3-4 inches with long, tapering hind wings which have eyespots on them in order to confuse potential predators. Although rarely seen due to their very brief, one week, adult lives, Luna moths are considered common. The adults do not eat or have mouths. They emerge as adults solely to mate, and as such, only live approximately one week. They are more commonly seen at night. Helen would like to give the moth to a collector. She may be contacted at 982-4226. (Staff photo by Deborah Bennett) |
