Ellis Woods Contracting, contractor for the Cotton Avenue TE-grant project, will have 45 additional days to complete the project. Millen City Council agreed to a 45 day extension on completing the work during the group's September meeting.

City Manager Lamar Faircloth reported that the contractor had requested the extension due to the fact the city was also installing a new waterline on Cotton Avenue and this had caused work on the TE-grant project to progress slower than expected. Originally the project was to be completed by Dec. 12. The extension will carry the project over into 2010.

Council was briefed by the city manager on the fact that Doctor's Hospice of Georgia, Inc. was interested in purchasing the property at the corner of Parker Street and Winthrope Avenue for the construction of a hospice hospital. The City had been requested to commit to provide at least an 8-inch waterline to the property.

After some discussion, council approved the extension of the water main on College Avenue up to Parker Street with the project costs to be paid out of Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax IV funds.

Council approved the use of the Court Room at the Municipal Building as an alternate polling place for county elections. It was explained that the county was required by law to have a designated alternate polling place in the event of a disaster that would prevent the use of the primary polling place.

Diane Wade appeared before council to discuss the removal of several azalea bushes on her street by city employees. It was explained that the shrubs were located on the city's right-ofway and were removed in order to place a manhole to provide better sewer service to the homes in the area.

Bobby Fries and J.C. Douglas addressed council concerning the contributions made to the city by former Mayor Robert Fries and asked council to consider naming something in his honor. The request was tabled for further consideration with Mr. Fries being told that a decision would made within 60 days.
