The Chatter Box

My little granddaughter Jaylee has learned to say, “Uh –oh,” whenever she drops something or falls down. She will then just pick up the item dropped or will get up and start walking again. She doesn’t let a little mishap distract her from whatever she was doing.

Wouldn’t it be great if we adults could imitate the “uh-oh” it’sokay attitudes of young children? Instead, as we grow older we seem to develop an “oh-no” now-everything-is-wrong mindset. The smallest mishap or little aggravation quickly ruins the entire day. If only we could say, “Uh-oh,” and move on as a child does!

So what if I burn the toast at breakfast? “Uh-oh.” Fix some more or do without. Chances are that an hour later I am not going to care, or even remember, whether or not I ate toast for breakfast. Having a bad hair day? “Uh-oh.” Put it in a ponytail and be thankful that I still have hair. Forgot my pocketbook? “Uh-oh.” Go back and get it. The office will still be there when I arrive.

Children also learn from their experiences. I’ve noticed that if Jaylee drops something, she will grip it tighter when she picks it up again. We adults seldom view life’s inconveniences as learning experiences. Instead they become major disasters.

For example, I have had at least 15 interruptions as I am trying to write this column, and I must admit that I am getting a little frustrated. So, I am going to take a deep breath, and say, “Uh-oh.” It’s getting too long anyway.
