By Deborah Bennett Millen News Editor

The first order of business for the Jenkins County Board of Education (BOE) at the January meeting was to name a chairman and vice-chairman.

Carroll Gay was unanimously re-elected chairman, and Roderick Campbell was unanimously re-elected vice-chairman.

Mr. Gay has completed 15 years of service, all while serving as chairman. Mr. Campbell has completed 16 years of service while serving as vice-chairman.

In comments to The Millen News, Jenkins County School Superintendent Melissa Williams said, “It is quite an honor to have Mr. Gay and Mr. Campbell elected to these leadership positions, which is indicative of their sincere dedication to our students and our schools. However, the success of the school system is dependent upon the entire board working as a cohesive team.”

In similar action, Vanderver R. Pool was unanimously reappointed as the school board attorney.

Meeting dates for the year were approved for 7 p.m. on the third Monday of each month with the exception of February and December 2010 and January 2011. The February meeting will be held Feb. 22; the December meeting on Dec. 13; and the January 2011 meeting on Jan. 10.

In other business, the BOE approved a non-profit fundraising activity for the Jenkins County Middle School (JCMS); approved Charley Waters as head boys’ track coach; and revised JCMS Beta Club Advisors as follows: Jessica Reese, Rhonda Clark, Nicole Green and John Paul Hearn as active advisors with Michelle Orvin removed, per her request.
