(Staff photos by Deborah Bennett) Jenkins County, along with much of the state, was hit by a rare snow storm Friday, Feb. 12. Weather forecasters warned days earlier that conditions were right for an arctic blast from the north to collide with moisture rising from the Gulf of Mexico which could result in significant snowfall across the South. Their predictions were correct. Jenkins County was blanketed in 3-4 inches of snow in a matter of hours.

As rain turned to sleet and then snow late Friday afternoon, surprised motorists found themselves in unfamiliar territory – navigating iced roads. Although there were no serious accidents reported, law enforcement and local wreckers were kept busy pulling vehicles out of ditches and medians in the early hours of the night.

By Saturday morning, however, the sun was out again, and the snow was on its way to becoming just a memory.
