City awards CDBG 2009 project
Parker Engineering was the successful bidder for engineering services on the City of Millen’s 2009 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) project. Millen City Council voted to award the firm the project during its February meeting.
City Manager Lamar Faircloth explained that five engineering firms responded to the Request for Qualifications. The firms were ranked by himself and the C.S.R.A. Rural Development Center staff with Parker Engineering attaining the highest ranking.
The $500,000 grant funds will be used for sewer improvements in the “Knox Homes” and Old Sylvania Road areas of the city.
Manager Faircloth reported that an ice machine had been obtained and installed at the Utilities Shop and that the city had saved approximately $800 on the purchase due to the efforts of Councilwoman Jane Johnson. He thanked her for her efforts.
Other actions taken by council included the following:
• Appointed Councilman Darrel Clifton to serve on the Board of Health;
• Appointed Councilman Walter Thomas to serve on the Jenkins County Family Enrichment Center Board;
• Approved the additional expenditure of $5,610 to extend the T.V. scope report an additional 3,000 feet along Railroad Street for the CDBG 2010 application; and
• Approved the donation of $250 to the Experience Works program.
