Commissioners approve bridge repairs
Several bridges in Jenkins County will soon get needed repairs. During the March 16 meeting of the Jenkins County Commissioners, the group approved finalizing a contract with the Georgia Department of Transportation for repairing bridges at Herndon, Old Perkins Road and Sculls Creek.
Rock Branch Church Road was approved for acceptance into the Jenkins County road system for maintenance of the road by the county, pending final signatures to the Deed of Dedication. The action was previously requested by citizens in the area.
The commissioners discussed the danger associated with entering Lane Road with county attorney Troy Gay inquiring as to how the group wanted to proceed to correct the problem. It was decided that a “speed limit” sign should be placed at the location.
Gay inquired about plans for replacement of the county jail. Chairman James Henry responded that Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax funds were being set aside for the project. When the funds accumulated became sufficient, replacement plans would be discussed at that time.
Field Director Grady Lane informed the group that a property owner had requested removal of garbage dumpsters from their property, offering to sell the county an acre of land at another location for the dumpsters. Container site consolidation was discussed as possible alternative.
Lane noted that resurfacing of the Sid Lanier Road would soon begin through the Department of Transportation’s LARP program. It was noted that repairs to East Old Savannah Road would also begin soon.
Repairs to trash containers needing new bottoms were discussed with the commissioners agreeing to have the containers repaired at a cost of $80 per can.
Other actions taken by the commissioners included the following:
• tabled action on a beer and wine application until all requirements were met;
• approved Census Proclamation and press release;
• postponed courthouse yard repairs until Phase II of the courthouse renovation project is completed;
• approved Jenkins County Transit System Alcohol and Drug Policy; and
• approved Jenkins County Transit System Policy and Procedures.
