BOE recognizes JCHS achievements

(Staff photos by Deborah Bennett) Jenkins County High School (JCHS) was recognized during the Monday, March 15, meeting of the Jenkins County Board of Education (BOE) for having achieved the Advancement Placement (AP) Access and Support School designation for the 2008-2009 school year.

Jenkins County School Superintendent Melissa Williams explained that the designation was bestowed by the State Board of Education upon schools with 30 percent of AP test takers who are African- American or Hispanic and with at least 30 percent of all AP exams scoring 3 or higher. AP classes and exams are administered by the College Board to students in high school. Students who receive a 3, 4 or 5 on AP exams may receive college credit.

Superintendent Williams pre- sented certificates of appreciation to BOE members in recognition of their service to the community and Board Member Appreciation Week.

In other matters, Superintendent Williams reported that enrollment in the local school system had increased by three students over the previous period with total enrollment listed at 1,501 students.

Transportation Coordinator Talmadge Fries reported fuel usage for the month of February at approximately 3,169 gallons of diesel and 176 gallons of gas. Field/athletic trips usage was reported at approximately 276 gallons of diesel and 11 gallons of gas.

Chairman Carroll Gay was appointed as a delegate to the Georgia School Board Association Conference, and Vice- Chairman Roderick Campbell was appointed as an alternate.

JCHS Principal Dr. Joseph Kirkland reported that two students had achieved recognition at the region literary competition. Ayana Walker placed first in Extemporaneous Speaking, and Jonathon McBride placed fourth in Boys’ Solos. Walker will advance to the state competition.
