Archaeological work at Camp Lawton
Archaeological work at the site of Camp Lawton, the Civil War prison at Magnolia Springs State Park, will continue through April with two Saturdays set aside for the public to view the work.
April 17 and May 1 have been set aside as Public Days, following two such days on March 6 and 27. According to Matthew Luke of Georgia Southern University, the efforts on March 27 would hopefully have expanded the discoveries previously made when a new trench was opened in the grass area near the museum.
Luke said that shovel testing at the northern end of the prison is nearing completion. Work in this area has led to the discovery of possible specific locations within the prison compound.
Everyone interested in this fascinating work now going on at Magnolia Springs is invited to the park April 17 and May 1.
