Augusta chapter DAC tours Jenkins Co.
Saturday, March 13, 25 members and guests of the W.H.T. Walker Chapter #2253 United Daughters of the Confederacy (DAC) in Augusta enjoyed a guided tour of various historical sites in Jenkins County. The group met at Magnolia Springs State Park for a brief meeting followed by a short presentation by Kevin Chapman of Georgia Southern University’s archaeological work currently in progress at the site of Fort Lawton. A delicious meal, prepared by Virginia Clark, was served at the park.
Ray Garvin, chaplain of the Buckhead-Fort Lawton Brigade Camp #2102 Sons of Confederate Veterans served as tour guide for the day. From Magnolia Springs the group traveled to Big Buckhead Church where Mr. Garvin gave a weapons demonstration and provided information on the church, nearby cemetery and events which occurred in the surrounding area during 1864. The group traveled by Birdsville Plantation and stopped in Herndon to learn about Sherman’s troop movements in the area. In downtown Millen the monuments on the courthouse lawn were viewed and the museum was open for the visitors. The tour ended in Scarboro, where Mr. Garvin presented each member of the group with a Confederate battle flag as a souvenir of the visit. After the tour, refreshments were served at the home of Keith and Susanne Fordham in Millen.
