Electronic recycling included in Keep Jenkins Beautiful

By Art Johnson

Please join the citizens who want Jenkins County to be an attractive and pleasant place to visit and live by participating in Keep Jenkins Beautiful Saturday, April 24. On Keep Jenkins Beautiful Day we focus on cleaning up the community by picking up trash and carrying out beautification projects. It is a great opportunity to show community pride and be part of making the city and county more appealing.

This year county citizens have the opportunity to dispose of old, broken, unwanted, outdated, nonworking electronics in a safe and environmentally friendly way. A trailer will be parked on the College Avenue side of the Jenkins County Courthouse from 8 a.m. until noon Saturday to receive electronic items.

The following groups have signed on for cleanup and beautification this year: Friends of Millen Cemetery, Jenkins County High School (JCHS) Interact Club, JCHS JROTC, JCHS Science Club, Azalea Garden Club, Millen Garden Club, Millen/ Jenkins County Chamber of Commerce Directors, Jenkins County 4-H Club, Oak Hill Baptist Church Youth and Millen Better Hometown.

It is also important for individuals to be part of this effort. Cleaning up in front of your own personal property is encouraged. Litter affects the quality of life in our community.

Anyone who wants to join us can pick up trash bags and gloves from 8-8:30 a.m. on the street behind the Jenkins County Courthouse or from the chamber office anytime this week. Individual volunteers are asked to call the chamber office after Saturday’s event and report the number of hours worked and the amount of trash collected.

During the month of April many groups will work to improve Georgia communities during this year’s Cleanup and Keep Georgia Beautiful Month. Last year was an award winning year for Georgia with 100 percent participation for its 159 counties. The record breaking participation included 737 communities across the state involving 80,494 volunteers. Jenkins Countians can be proud to be counted in this number.
