City approves grant application
The Millen Fire Department could be the recipient of new turn-out gear if an application for a Federal FEMA Fire Assistance Grant is approved.
Millen City Council voted in favor of submitting the application in the amount of $44,200 during the group’s April meeting, upon recommendation of City Manager Lamar Faircloth. He explained that under terms of the grant the city would need to provide 5 percent in matching funds which would amount to $2,210. If awarded, the funds will be used to purchase new turn-out gear for firefighters.
In other matters, council heard remarks from a city resident concerning speeding and drag racing in his neighborhood. After some discussion, Mayor King Rocker asked the resident to give council some time to discuss options. He assured the resident that either the Public Safety Director or Director of Public Works would get back in touch with him.
Two members were approved for appointment to the Millen Historic Preservation Commission, upon request of Art Johnson of Millen Better Hometown. Rodney Collins and Libby Williams were approved to serve.
In his report to council, City Manager Faircloth noted that the Georgia Department of Transportation had requested that the city provide water for their trucks when they are doing work in the local area. In the spirit of cooperation, he said he had agreed to the request.
Faircloth informed council that the cost for the video inspection of city sewer lines in the 2010 Community Development Block Grant target area was $10,140.65.
Other actions taken by council included the following:
• Tabled action on a request that rental prices for the Millen Community House be reduced until further information could be obtained regarding expenses associated with rental of the facility;
• Approved the destruction of city records for which the period required to keep them had passed;
• Approved a donation of $100 to the Jenkins County Library for the Summer Reading program; and
• Approved a donation of $100 to the Jenkins County High School JROTC to help defray costs for their Military Ball.
