The Jenkins County High School Lady War Eagles traveled to Albany May 6-8 with the hopes of winning the Class A State Track Meet. The Lady Eagles came up short finishing a very respectable ninth place in the state. But the dream of being the State Champion was realized by junior Zandra Lake. Lake jumped 36’0” to become the Class A Triple Jump State Champion.
Coach Chuck Sanders states, “Zandra has jumped great all season, and she put it all together at the state meet to become the State Champion. Zandra is a great athlete and will only be better next year.”
Junior Ayana Walker also had several outstanding performances for the Lady War Eagles. Walker was state runner up in the 200 meter dash with a time of 25.41 (winning time was 24.90). She came in third place in the 100 meter dash with a time of 12.54 (winning time 12.22).
Senior Deondra Lewis also had an outstanding performance in the Discus finishing seventh with a throw of 102’ 5” (win- ning throw was 122’4”). The 4 x 400 relay team came in eighth at state with a time of 4:19.530 (winning time was 4:03.470). The team of Ayana Walker, Jasmen Taylor, Shae Burke and Zandra Lake (alternates Shenice Thompson and Shalyn Morris) ran an excellent race.
The Lady War Eagles track team plans on returning next season better and stronger. Coach Sanders states, “I would like to thank all the girls for a fun and exciting successful track season. We look forward to next year but we will miss our senior Deondra Lewis. Deondra has been a strong competitor for us over the last four years, and we wish her much success in her future endeavors.”
