Commissioners approve ditching of roads

By Deborah Bennett Millen News Editor

County roads in need of ditching will soon see improvements.

A Thrift Road resident met with the Jenkins County Commissioners during the group’s April 20 meeting and requested that ditches be dug along side Thrift Road and that the county maintain the road. It was agreed that the county’s Road Department crews would begin ditching all county roads immedi- ately and that Thrift Road would be the first on the list.

Field Director Grady Lane reported that two Jenkins County residents had requested to “adopt” Hiltonia Road for trash pick-up. He noted that information was needed regarding the adoption process.

Lane explained problems with cut telephone cables on Mockingbird Lane. It was determined that the county would send five road employees, along with five city employees, to train on cable location. The costs of the training, $650, would be split between the two governing bodies.

The commissioners heard a request from a county employee seeking a Cobra insurance discount after which the employee was instructed to file an appeal with the insurance company. It was also determined that the county attorney should be consulted about the matter.

Other actions taken by the commissioners included the following:

• Accepted a bid from Coursey Construction for the grinding of concrete;

• Approved the 2010-2011 employment contract for 4-H program assistant;

• Tabled consideration on a Service Proposal for the Jenkins County Tax Appraiser’s office until the tax appraiser could be consulted; and

• Approved the lease of a new copy machine for the Jenkins County Clerk of Court.
