BOE considers childcare for employees
Child care, resignations, grounds maintenance and waivers were several of the items on the May Jenkins County Board of Education (BOE) meeting agenda last week.
Kimberly Neville presented information on the possibility of providing a child care program for BOE employees. The program would be funded from the fees collected through payroll deduction of those utilizing the service. Parents would be responsible for furnishing the bottles, diapers, etc. for their child. Surplus furniture and donations would be sought to equip the room. The charges would be $75 per week for children attending whole days, $60 for those attending half days and $25 a day for drop-ins. It would be staffed with one fulltime and one part-time employee and housed at Jenkins County Elementary School. More details will be given to the BOE at future meetings before a final decision is made.
Because of the changes in the school year calendar approved at a previous meeting, it will be necessary for the BOE to apply for a seat-time (instruction time) waiver from the state BOE. The waiver will be a request to slightly reduce the current 150 hour seat time requirement to earn one Carnegie unit for some classes at JCHS. The state BOE has already approved a blanket waiver for all local BOEs to adjust the length of the school year as needed.
The resignations of Debbie Davis (retirement), Ashley Burch, Hilary Oliver, Donna English and Damita Bynes, as well as the approval of Walter Ivey and Bryan Weatherford as Jenkins County Middle School football community coaches, were approved.
The BOE recognized the accomplishments of the girls and boys track teams who represented the school system in flying fashion at their respective state meets. Boy’s coach, Charley Waters, has also been honored with the Jenkins County High School (JCHS) yearbook dedication.
Six grounds maintenance bids were opened and read. Each set of bid documents will be examined to determine if all BOE specifications were met before a final decision is made.
A called BOE meeting will be held in the near future to continue budget discussions for the 2010-2011 year.
