Cotton Avenue dedication set for June 11

By Deborah Bennett Millen News Editor

Work on Cotton Avenue has been completed, and a dedication ceremony has been set for 7 p.m. Friday, June 11.

Activities planned include a street dance from 8 p.m. until 11 p.m. featuring the Hushpuppy band and a “Taste of Jenkins.” Advance tickets are on sale now for $10 each at the Millen-Jenkins County Chamber of Commerce.

Improvements to Cotton Avenue were provided through two Georgia Department of Transportation TE-grants received by the City of Millen. The first grant in the amount of $500,000 was awarded in 2004. This project incorporated green space into Cotton Avenue, provided enhanced lighting, made the sidewalks handicap accessible and initiated parallel parking on the store side of the street.

An additional $350,000 grant was awarded the city in 2005 for construction of additional parking on the railroad side of the street, among other things. The two projects were eventually combined.

The street has also received a new surface. Additional details concerning the dedication ceremony will appear in next week’s edition of The Millen News.
