Commissioners approve removal of trees
While most would agree that trees are beautiful, they can create problems. The Jenkins County Commissioners approved the removal of two trees at the rear of the Jenkins County Courthouse during the group’s June 1 meeting. The action was taken because of debris dropping from trees into the cooling unit and dampness causing rot in the rear columns of the structure.
The action was taken lightly, however. The commissioners recessed for 15 minutes to inspect the trees after which bids to remove them were considered. The low bid from Lewis Tree and Stump in the amount of $1,500 was approved.
In other matters, a previous employee of the county was approved for temporary employment during the summer months with the Road Department. Field Director Grady Lane reported that the county attorney had advised that the law does not require advertising the position in order to comply with hiring procedures.
The motion carried 4-1 with Commissioners James Henry, Pam Dwight, Floyd Chance and Tommy Lane voting in favor. Commissioner Domingo Green opposed.
Other actions taken by the commissioners included the following:
• Approved removal of Jail Fund from Regions Bank to Queensborough Bank, pending further information and fees charged;
• Reappointed Bonnie Wiggins to serve a 5-year term on the Jenkins County Family and Children Services Board of Directors; and
• Tabled nominations for membership on the Jenkins County Hospital Authority Board of Directors.
