Voters head to polls for General Primary July 20
Voters across the state will go to the polls Tuesday, July 20, to cast their ballots in the Democratic/ Republican General Primary/ Special Election.
The only contested race locally is that for the District #5 seat on the Jenkins County Board of Commissioners. Incumbent James (Jerry) Henry faces opposition from Mae Francis Wright Harris and Bill Sipes.
Uncontested local positions and candidates include: State Court Solicitor, Troy Gay; and Jenkins County Commissioner, District #2, Pamelia Ann Dwight.
All local candidates have qualified on the Democratic ticket.
On the state level, the gubernatorial race is generating the most interest. Democratic candidates include Thurbert Baker, Roy E. Barnes, Bill Bolton, Carl Camon, Randal Mangham, Dubose Porter and David Poythress. Republican candidates are Jerry Chapman, Nathan Deal, Karen Handel, Eric Johnson, Ray McBerry, John W. Oxendine and Otis Putnam.
Early and absentee voting will take place until 5 p.m. Friday, July 16, at the Jenkins County Courthouse. Applications for absentee ballots may be made in the office of the Jenkins County Registrar at the Jenkins County Courthouse through July 16.
All regular polling places will be open on Election Day from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., and anyone who was registered to vote as of June 21 may vote in this election.
