Donnie Pope, 73, died July 7 at St. Joseph’s
Mr. Donnie Pope, 73, died Wednesday July 7, 2010 at St. Joseph’s Hospital.
Funeral services were held 11 a.m. Saturday, July 10, 2010 at the Statesboro Primitive Baptist Church with Elder Randy Waters officiating. Interment was in Bulloch Memorial Gardens.
The Jenkins County native had lived in Bulloch County for most of his life. He was a 1954 graduate of Jenkins County High School. Mr. Pope was a partner in The Jones Lane Company until he founded Pope Construction in 1972 which he owned and operated until his retirement 1998. He was a member of the Tuesday Night Supper Club, the St. Catherine’s Fishing Club and Southern Boosters. Mr. Pope loved to travel and was an avid fisherman. One of his greatest joys was helping others. He attended the Statesboro Primitive Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Evelyn Chester Pope; a son and daughter-in-law, Jeff and NeNe Pope; a daughter and sonin law, Jana and Rob Sharp; four grandchildren, Coley Pope, J.D. Pope, Fischer Sharp and Spencer Sharp; a brother and sister in-law, Ronnie and Sherry Pope, all of Statesboro; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Bobbie Joyce Atkinson of Garfield and Judy and Austin Yearty of Cochran; two sisters-in-law and brothers in-law, Carolyn and Carl Lucas and Joyce and Roy Kennedy; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Jack and Martha Chester, all of Statesboro; two special friends, Terri Sheehan and Heather Heldreth; and a caregiver, Maggie White.
Pallbearers were Donald Atkinson, Chris Atkinson, Mark Glover, Scott Pope, Wes Pope, Dennis Lucas, Frankie Kennedy, Allan Chester and Keith Glover. Honorary pallbearers were members of the Jenkins County High School Class of 1954; and the employees of Pope Construction;
