The Chatter Box

By Deborah Bennett

The rest of the story –

I received numerous inquiries last week concerning the article on the discovery of the body of First Lt. Robert “Bob” Anderson in Burma by the U.S. military. He was listed as a Millen resident missing in action in World War II, and there is a lot of interest in the Millen connection.

My first research efforts found little information on Anderson, just a short blurb in the newspaper. Since then, however, I have discovered another news article. His parents are listed in this article as R.E. and Ethel Anderson of Savannah, formerly of Augusta. His employment is listed as being the Banker’s Insurance Company in Augusta before his enlistment. The Augusta Chronicle also ran a letter from Lt. Anderson in one of their issues near the time he went missing and part of that letter appeared in The Millen News’ article.

Several local citizens recall that Mr. Anderson’s mother, Ethel, ran a cafĂ© close to the train station, near the old Bank of Millen location on Cotton Avenue. She was married to Mr. Curt Johnson, but was still called “Mrs. Anderson” by most who knew her.

Dot Cauley of the Margaret Jones #27 United Daughters of the Confederacy stopped by the office last week to present The Millen News with a Certificate of Appreciation for the newspaper’s willingness to run articles submitted by the group. It is always nice to get a “pat on the back.” Thanks, Dot, for taking the time to stop by.
