Cotton Ave. Flea market gets nod from council

By Deborah Bennett Millen News Editor

Vendors desiring to sell “flea market” items will soon have a prime location to do so – The Cotton Market Park on Cotton Avenue.

Millen City Council approved during its June meeting a request from Millen Better Hometown to allow the group to organize a flea market at the park that would only be open Friday afternoons. In connection with this action, Council also approved the issuance of a Limited Vendor’s License for $50 annually to those desiring to use the flea market. The license was approved for use at the Cotton Market Park location only.

In other action, Council voted to extend the city’s gas line from Magnolia Street, down Old Sylvania Road to John C. Wilson Company in order to supply gas for 10 additional peanut dryers at the business. City Manager Lamar Faircloth explained that the cost of the project was estimated to be $15,346 and that $12,462.54 was available in Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) IV funds for the project. The difference would come from the city’s General Fund.

After some discussion, Council approved the project with funding to come initially from SPLOST and General Fund revenue. However, a contract will be executed with John C. Wilson Company that will allow the city to recover some/all of its expenses.

A contract for replacing the roof at the Millen Community House was awarded to Frank Garvin in the amount of $10,850. Manager Faircloth explained that the project had been advertised in The Millen News and that several contractors had been contacted personally to inform them of the job. However, Mr. Garvin’s bid was the only one received.

Other action taken by Council included the following:

• Approved an insurance policy from Humana Healthcare for city employees;

• Approved low bid in the amount of $48 from I Spy Pest Control to provide pest control services at the Municipal Building and Millen Community House;

• Approved purchase of a truck for the Public Works Department with funding to come from SPLOST V revenue;

• Approved resolution on joint Jenkins County/City of Millen Comprehensive Plan 10-year update; and

• Approved resolution of support for renovation of Edenfield Apartments.
