Dear Editor:

I have lived in Millen for 33 years. I am deeply saddened by the condition of the building on Cleveland Avenue. I am referring to the school that was once a beautiful, historical building when we moved here in 1977. It is now in such a state of disrepair, such an eyesore and such a danger. I can only imagine how upset the people who live in the neighborhood must be.

As I have attended the United Methodist Church through the years, I have watched the deterioration of this once beautiful and meaningful structure, and it has evoked many emotions, besides sadness. Now it is anger.

Who is in charge and why has it been allowed to deteriorate? I know cost is always the issue. I also know that the leaders of this county/city/board of education need to come together and decide if this building cannot be repaired, then, please, do something constructive. Maybe build a park/playground or something useful. It could be used for extra parking for Millen Baptist and Millen Methodist churches.

I know many Millen residents have fond memories of good times and a good education in those halls. If nothing can be done to save the building, then, please, put the plaque that remains in the museum or courthouse. At least save some of the history of this once fine educational structure.

Are you listening, leaders? Please do something. Do not let this continue to be a danger/liability.
