MPD arrest Statesboro man on fraud charges

JEROME SLAUGHTER JEROME SLAUGHTER A Statesboro man accused of entering the Jenkins County Hospital July 22 and stealing an employee’s wallet was picked up by Millen Police Department (MPD) officers Friday, July 30, with assistance from a local business owner.

Jerome Slaughter, 49, of 106 Harden Road, Statesboro, is charged with financial transaction card theft, financial transaction card fraud and theft by taking. He also faces charges in Burke and Richmond counties.

On July 30 Slaughter, along with two unidentified females, allegedly entered the Jenkins County Hospital and stole a wallet of an employee from under her desk. They used the credits cards at Fred’s and BI-LO in Millen before traveling to Burke County where the cards were used at three locations.

On July 30, Slaughter was spotted at Thompson’s Corner, U.S. Highway 25 North, by the victim’s husband as he was attempting to use a gift card bought with the stolen credit cards. MPD was notified and Slaughter was taken into custody a short distance from the store. At the time of his apprehension, Slaughter had in his possession stolen checks from Effingham County where he is also facing charges.

Several other arrests in the case are pending.
