Phase II Courthouse renovation continues

Work on Phase II of the Jenkins County Courthouse renovation project has begun. County Field Director Grady Lane reported on the project during a July meeting of the Jenkins County Commissioners.

Phase II consists of renovation and repairs to the columns, porches and fascia of the structure. The bid on the project was previously awarded in May to Dabbs-Williams Construction Company in the amount of $477,000.

The commissioners approved the placement of the following county roads on the LARP list for consideration for paving by the Department of Transportation (DOT): Old Louisville Road, Perkins Green Fork Road, Birdsville Road-one mile-then to Burke County line; Paramore Hill Road and East Old Savannah Road. The DOT will make the final decision on the matter.

Other actions taken by the commissioners included the following:

• Approved the employment of Joseph Stafford as a paramedic with the Jenkins County Ambulance Service;

• Tabled action on the GIS Parcel Geodatabase Conversion (tax maps) until Chairman James Henry could discuss the matter with the Regional Commission;

• Approved operating on a “continuation budget” at the present time for 2010-2011 at the same level as the 2009-2010 fiscal year;

• Approved a second commissioner to sign an E-911 fund check for the City of Millen;

• Approved placement of ad in the ACCG magazine the month of October;

• Approved the purchase of a Dell laptop computer for the Jenkins County Tax Appraiser’s office at a cost of $884.70;

• Approved the Remaining Capacity Landfill Contract with Stantec Consulting Services, Inc. at a cost not exceed $3,500; and

• Approved a contract with the C.S.R.A. Regional Commission to provide meals for the Jenkins County Senior Citizens Center with the county’s portion being

3,951.60 for a total contract amount of $42,399.60.
