Payroll may be delayed for school staff
A reduction in state revenue that affects QBE funding, may make it necessary to delay payroll for Jenkins County school system staff for the months of November and December. Jenkins County School Superintendent Melissa Williams advised Jenkins County Board of Education (BOE) members of the situation during an Aug. 10 called meeting.
If the delay becomes necessary, school employees will not get their checks until the last working day of the month in November and December. A letter will be sent to all employees advising them of the situation in order to allow them to make preparations for the holidays. The situation will be monitored, and BOE members will be advised of any action taken by the state.
In other matters, Superintendent Williams noted that the day care program being considered for school system employees did not materialize as it was not proven that the program could operate in a self-sufficient manner.
She also explained that with recent flooding on Barney Avenue at the overpass and problems created by the flow of water from the gymnatorium area, the City of Millen had initiated plans to pursue a grant that would assist with a retention pond on school grounds.
Superintendent Williams updated BOE members on the removal of portable units at the old primary school site, noting that legal counsel had been sought in the matter.
Jim Jarvis, director of the Alternative School, outlined plans for the new school year under the Pathways Program.
Other actions taken by the BOE included the following:
• Approved student/parent handbook supplement for the Alternative School Pathways Program;
• Approved a motion declaring a 1970 mobile home unit located behind the Jenkins County Elementary School as surplus;
• Approved a life insurance proposal from Hadden Insurance by which all employees will receive $10,000 in life insurance at a cost of $2,865 to the school system;
• Linda Burke was approved for employment as Jenkins County High/Middle School cafeteria manager;
• Cassandra Sampson was approved for employment as a special education paraprofessional at the Jenkins County High/Middle School;
• Approved supplements for all school employees and central office personnel as submitted with several exceptions;
• Approved a flexible schedule of 230 days instead of 260 days for the Business Manager without a change in salary; and
• Approved Cheryl Conley to serve as CTAE Director.
