For decades the Magnolia Springs Motel has witnessed the endless flow of traffic on U.S. Highway 25 North, providing lodging for weary travelers. Gradually, however the years took a toll on the motel, and it became an eyesore to those passing by rather than a restful haven. The story does not end here, however. The motel is getting a new look and a new name – Magnolia Springs Inn and Suites.
The property was recently purchased by David and Dave Pike of Athens. The father/son team said they saw the purchase of the property as a good investment as the motel is located near the Jenkins County Airport and is on a major highway. The two men, who are avid aviators, had initially planned on renovating the motel for use as a flight school, utilizing the local airport.
However, the recent announce- ment of archeological discoveries at Magnolia Springs State Park, located only a short distance from the property, has spurred them to change their plans. The owners now say they will put the property back into use as a motel, anticipating that the need for such a facility may arise due to increased tourism and traffic along U.S. Highway 25.
When renovations are completed, the motel will feature not only single rooms but also suites and a gym/fitness center, office center and snack room which guests may use during their stays. There are also plans to create a lake, stocked with fish, utilizing the large pit behind the motel that was created by highway construction.
“It will pretty much be a brand new motel when we get through,” said David Pike.
Renovation and other activities at the motel have already created a few local jobs, Mr. Pike said, noting that once completed, employees will also be needed to run the facility.
The Pikes are also contributing to the local economy by buying locally everything they can for the project.
The Pikes have plans for other business ventures locally that include pursuing their original idea of establishing a flight school and a new idea, expanding their main business venture, metal recycling, to include a facility here.
“We have just fallen in love with Millen and Jenkins County. Everyone I’ve met is wonderful,” said Mr. Pike.
A grand opening for Magnolia Springs Inn and Suites will most likely take place within three months at which time the public will be invited to drop by, meet the Pikes and tour the renovated motel.
