The Chatter Box

By Deborah Bennett

A relative recently brought me a pocket knife that had once belonged to my granddaddy, George Rabitsch. Granddaddy had given the knife to the relative, and he remarked that he was willing to part with it as it would be a nice family heirloom to pass down to my little grandson when he gets older.

I was thrilled to get it, and will keep it for Ty until he is old enough to have a pocket knife. At that time I will be sure to tell him about his great-great-granddaddy and the numerous squirrels, fish and rabbits that the knife cleaned during his lifetime as well as the sling shots it carved from tree branches.

I have a feeling that the knife is going to be “at home” with Ty as his favorite thing to play with now is a plain old stick. Forget the expensive toys, just cut a tree branch and give it to him, and he is happy!

Granddaddy would be pleased.

The annual Fair-on-the-Square Oct. 2 was another huge success with a large crowd in attendance on the courthouse lawn. Due to renovation of the Jenkins County Courthouse and construction work on Cotton Avenue, the fair was moved to a different location last year and the highlight event, a parade, had to be cancelled.

Thankfully, everything was back to normal this year. Even the weather cooperated by not being too hot, too wet or too cold. It was a beautiful day.

The parade delighted everyone, especially the children and youth along the route. I am sure all came away with their pockets full of candy! There were numerous craft booths and plenty of food choices with great entertainment throughout the day.

Congratulations to Millen Better Hometown, sponsor of the event, and everyone else who had a part in continuing the tradition of the Fair-on-the-Square!
