Semi-pro football comes to Millen

(Photo contributred) Football fans now have a new semi-pro team to support, the East Georgia Rebels, whose roster includes several local names: Brian Walker, Andrew Barnette, Akeem Frison, Anthony Scott, Terry Williams, Coley Clifton and John Wilson.

“Anyone who missed their chance to further their career in football or who just loves to play the game, is invited to come out and see if they have what it takes to go to the next level,” said owner/head coach Bobby Dammarell.

“We have scouts from all areas that come to see what we have to offer. So, if you think this might be the next step for you, then come check us out or give us a call,” said defensive coordinator Larry Lawrence.

Community Day, the team’s first annual blue/white game, will be held 4-8 p.m. Saturday, May 28, at the Jenkins County Recreation Department complex. The event will include a chance to win a 50 inch flat screen t.v. and other prizes. Admission price is a canned good that will be donated to the Golden Harvest Food Bank.

Practice days are Mondays, 7- 9 p. m.; Wednesdays, 7- 9 p.m.; and Saturdays 4-6 p.m. at the recreation department complex.

Other team members are Jenny Dammarell and Tami Corbridge, operations, Daniel Johnson, John Lee, Juan Castro, Terrence Foots, Benjamin Taylor, Shane Williams, Brian Easterling, Gregory Wright, Joe Levy Williams, Eric McGlamery, Derrell Johnson, Arsenio Wright, Tony Bacon, Desmond Pace, Quentin Williams, Gregtavian Wallace, Rendard Denson, Bryan Collins, Tharon Davis, John Coppock, Darriyon Oglesby, Johnathon Humphrey, Antwon Wooden, Mark White, John David Drummer, Walter Williams, Christopher Oglesby, Christopher Hill, Alton Sapp, Franklin Jones, Justin Coggins, Nick Burgess and Rafael Harris.

The team’s schedule is as follows: June 4, Sumter County Stars, home, 7 p.m.; June 11, Florida Rhinos, home, 7 p.m.; June 18, Florida Falcons, away, 7 p.m.; June 25, Jefferson County Warriors, home, 7 p.m.; July 2, BYE; July 9, Florida Falcons, away, 7 p.m.; July 16, Sumter County Stars, away, 7 p.m.; July 23, Florida Rhinos, away, 7 p.m.; July 30, Florida Falcons, home, 7 p. m.; Aug. 6, Jefferson County Warriors, away, 7 p.m.; Aug. 13, Sumter County Stars, home, 7 p.m.; Aug. 20, BYE; and Aug. 27, play-offs begin.
