Youth conference is a success

Churches are constantly advocating that young people take a stand for what is right. Recently, some young people did and organized The Stand, which was a youth conference held Saturday, April 30, at the Rocky Ford Baptist Church of Millen. There were over 70 children and adults in attendance. The theme of the conference was “He Wants it All”. The organizers of this event were 11 local students who call themselves B.A.S.I.C., which is an acronym for Becoming a Soldier in Christ.

The Stand featured a youth led and spirit infused worship service, Bible-based and relevant classes taught by Senior B.A.S.I.C. members, and a keynote address by Apostle Darrell Smith, pastor of House of Fire Ministries. During the worship services, there were also special performances by two local groups, the Gospel Twins and UVP. At the end of his keynote address, Apostle Smith was led to have an altar call. The response was incredible with a majority of the youth coming to the altar to make a firm commitment and take a stand for Christ in the community. Following the benediction, B.A.S.I.C. members provided door prizes and refreshments.

An outsider looking in could not tell that the organizers ranged in age from 14 to18 years old. These young people were able to make a spirit-filled event available at no cost to the attendees. B.A.S.I.C. held bake sales, a gas raffle, sold Krispy Crème doughnuts and received a number of donations in an effort to make this event reality. Their only goal was that young people would grow closer to Christ. By the overwhelming response during the worship service and altar call, it was apparent that their mission was indeed accomplished.

The group expressed appreciation to those who donated funds, parents, the House of Fire Ministries, and Rocky Ford Baptist Church for their support.

B.A.S.I.C. members present at the conference were: Shenice Thompson, President; Jonathan Carrie, Dondre DeJesus Zandra Lake, Lavonte Lovett, Ayana Walker, Jonquette Sanders, Jasmen Taylor, Niya Adams, Jenifer Sanders, and Sebriana Dunn.
