County sets budget with no tax increase

By Deborah Bennett Millen News Editor

The county will toe the line with its 2011-2012 budget. The Jenkins County Commissioners approved a $6,968,068 tentative budget with no tax increase during a July meeting, marking the fourth year that the commissioners have not sought a tax increase.

It was determined during budget discussions that employee salaries would remain at current levels with the commissioners to review the matter again in December, after property tax receipts have been determined.

In a related matter, a continuing resolution was approved that would allow the current budget to remain in effect until the 2012 budget is finalized at a later meeting date.

Mrs. Shirley Chance, Jenkins County Senior Citizen director, met with the group requesting permission to hold a fundraising event with proceeds to be used to replace the carpet at the Center. After some discussion, Commissioners Tommy lane, Floyd Chance and Domingo Green expressed the opinion that the county should be responsible for replacement of the carpet.

Chairman James Henry noted that fundraising events should be approved by the commissioners prior to the event, and Commissioner Pamelia Dwight requested that yearly plans for activities and trips be submitted to the board so that the commissioners could work with the group.

Other actions taken by the commissioners included the following:

• Approved employment of Brandon Smart for the summer as a Road Department employee;

 Approved the reappointment of Horace Weathersby to the Jenkins County Recreation Board of Directors for a 3-year term;

 Approved acceptance of the OneGeorgia Grant in the amount of $1,174,023 for extension of runway at airport;

 Approved revisions to Drug and Alcohol Policy for transit program;

 Approved including Georgia law for seat belt restraints in county’s Policy and Procedures Manual;

 Tabled E-911 budget pending discussion with City Manager;

 Approved Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax budget for 2012 in the amount of $707,000; and

 Approved Drug Fund Budget of $65,832 and Juvenile Program Fund Budget of $3,150 for 2012.
