City’s CDBG project on schedule
Work is progressing on schedule on the City of Millen’s $500,000 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) project that will enable the city to provide gas, water and sewer services to the Jenkins Correctional Center under correction by Corrections Corporation of America (CCA).
During a public hearing held Friday, Sept. 2, at the Municipal Building, Stephanie Quattlebaum, C.S.R.A. Regional Commission, Economic Development Director, and Carol DeLoach, C.S.R.A. Regional Commission, Economic Development Specialist, presented information on the project.
The grant was awarded to the city in July and, in conjunction with other funding sources, will be used to drill a 12-inch well on-site, construct a 500,000 gallon water tank, connect the existing water system to the new well and tank, construct a 15-inch gravity sewer main to the wastewater treatment plant and construct a new pump station at the treatment plant. Work on most areas is well underway.
A breakdown of the funds awarded reveals that $470,000 is allotted for construction costs and $30,000 for administration. The project is expected to benefit low to moderate income persons with the creation of approximately 200 jobs at the Jenkins Correctional Center when it opens in March 2012.
