Mike Zarem of the Teachers Retirement System (TRS) of Georgia was the guest speaker at the Jan. 12 meeting of the Jenkins Retired Educators Association held at the Jenkins County Board of Education office. Mr. Zarem reported on the fiscal strength of TRS, showing it in the top 10 of such pension plans among the 50 states. TRS paid out some $3 billion to retirees in 2011.
