The Chatter Box

By Deborah Bennett

A news story in The Sylvania Telephone last week concerning the discovery of 117 starving dogs and many dead ones at a Screven County kennel was very disturbing! The animals were discovered without food or water and in horrible, unsanitary conditions after a visitor spotted his own missing dog in a cage and reported it to law enforcement. Two dogs died while law enforcement was on the scene, too far gone for help. Since the Garden of Eden, man has been given the divine task of taking care of God’s creation, including the animals in it. To abuse and neglect helpless creatures in such a manner is beyond my comprehension. The fact that it was a state-licensed kennel is also incomprehensible! Dogs are among the most loyal and loving animals known to man. That is why they have been called “man’s best friend.” It is jus too bad that some men, and women, are not a dog’s best friend! Hopefully, those responsible for this tragedy will receive the justice they deserve.

I have been asked by a very appreciative citizen to give a word of “thanks” to Planters Electric Membership Corporation for an item given away during their recent annual meeting. Those attending received foot tubs that were designated as having been “Made in America.” To Planters E.M.C. – your choice of an Americanmade product as a gift to consumers did not go unrecognized or unappreciated. Well done!

Don’t forget to set your clocks BACK one hour before retiring for the night this Saturday as Daylight Savings Time ends, otherwise you will be an hour early for church services. This is the only incidence in which we can “regain time already spent” – even if it is only an hour. I like it, especially on Sunday morning when I can sleep an hour longer. Who am I kidding? I “wake up with the chickens” every day of the week!

Happy birthday this week to: J.R. Schwonke, Amanda Troisi, Lillie McDowell, Evan Moore, Wade Ward, Ron Washburn, Camery Meeks, Wayne Rich, Mary Kucera, Charles Parrish and Evelyn Young.

Celebrating wedding anniversaries this week are Mr. and Mrs. Don Godbee.
