JCHS girls’ and boys’ tennis teams are headed to State competition

Not pictured: Alexis Deal. (Photo contributed) The Jenkins County High School (JCHS) girls’ tennis team won the Region Championship for Area 2 in Class A public schools on April 16. They will play in the GHSA Class A Public Girls State Tennis Tournament.

The JCHS boys’ tennis team ended their regular season 6-3, and as North Sub-Region runner-ups. In addition, they finished third in the region after defeating Charlton County on April 18th with a 5-0 victory and will advance to the GHSA Class A Public Boys State Tennis Tournament.

On the road to winning the region championship, the Lady Eagles tennis team first won the North Sub-Region regular title, ensuring them a top seed. The girls’ regular season record ended as follows: 7-2, with wins over Bryan County, Claxton, Johnson County, Toombs, and ECI this season.

The score was tied 2- 2 and it all came down to the final match of the day. With one match left to be completed...the War Eagle fans and all the pressure descended upon the No. 1 Doubles pairing of Jenny Taylor (Sr.) and Dona Gay (Soph.) The Lady War Eagles won the first set 6-2 and the Clinch County Panthers took the second set at 4-6. With region title on the line...the girls fought back from a 1-4 deficient to win 7-5 over Clinch Co. in the third set.

(Staff photo by Deborah Bennett) “I tried not to let that seed of doubt set in, but we were down...then the score was tied 5-5,” Coach Melissa Cobb said. “I was so afraid of the match going into a tiebreak so I pulled the girls aside to give them some words of encouragement and advice. My Senior Jenny Taylor said that she refused to lose.”

Singles Player Noemi Reyes (Jr.), Doubles Partners Amanda Harden (Jr.) and Harley Purvis (Jr.) and Doubles Partners Jenny Taylor (Sr.) and Dona Gay (Soph.) all won their matches to clinch the region victory.
