The Chatter Box

By Deborah Bennett

There was an article in last week’s True Citizen by Elizabeth Billips urging parents to keep a close watch on their children after two attempted kidnappings were reported in Jefferson County.

The first attempt occurred Sept. 9 when a 13-year-old girl was sitting alone on the steps of a home waiting for the school bus to arrive. She noticed a dark, 4-door car pass by, circle back and then park. A white, blond, female got of the vehicle, ran towards the girl and attempted to grab her arm. The woman got back in the vehicle after the girl ran to a neighbor’s house.

The second attempt occurred Sept. 18 when a 16-year-old girl was walking home from the store with two 11-year-old boys around 7:30 p.m. A white, work van with tinted windows and swing-out doors sped past them and cut the kids off at an angle. Two, stocky, black, males got out of the van and came toward them. The children ran to safety. The targets appear to be African-American teen-age girls. And is not known if the two incidents are connected, but parents in the area are being warned to be cautious.

This is scary! Jenkins County is not that far from Jefferson County!

Please, everyone, talk with your children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews about what to do if they are approached by a stranger. Children, especially younger ones, often assume they must “obey adults”, even if they don’t know them. Make sure they understand that it is appropriate for them to fight, scream loudly, hide and run if they feel threatened. It is always better to “be safe now than sorry later”!

I have known for awhile that I can’t keep up with my own birthday any more, but now it seems I can’t find the right page in my birthday calendar for this column. I seem to have printed the birthdays and anniversaries for this week in last week’s column. So, I will, hopefully, just get back on track next week!
