The Chatter Box

By Deborah Bennett

We recently had my husband’s old farm truck fixed. We just wanted to get it running again so as to be able to take the trash off with it and use it to travel dirt roads when needed.

It had been out of commission for so long I had forgotten some of the “oddities” of driving the old truck. For example, the air conditioner doesn’t work. So, we ride with the windows down in the summer. I haven’t done that in quite awhile. In the winter, the heater will “burn you up.” The fastest thing about the truck is the time it takes the heater to begin working. Riding with the rear glass window open can be dangerous. There’s no telling what might blow out of the back into the cab. The windshield wipers may work, and they may not, depending upon their “mood.”

We always drive slowly when leaving the yard, because a chicken may be nesting in the bed of the truck, and we want to make sure it can fly out before we hit the highway. My husband once drove all the way to town before one flew out the back in downtown Millen. I’m sure anyone who saw that thought, “Country has come to town”!

If there is anything missing from around the yard, we always check the old truck first and usually find it there. It’s kind of gathering place for things we don’t need often. But, we never leave anything in the back that we don’t want our grandchildren playing with. It’s like a “playhouse” to them. A rope becomes a “fishing line” and a rake a “fishing pole.” It’s also a favorite hiding place for hide-and-seek.

Riding in the old truck is like taking a trip down “memory lane” – recalling all the fun times when it was new and shiny. Back in the day, it was something! I think it still is.
