“Black Friday” is a term used to refer to the day after Thanksgiving. It is traditionally the busiest shopping day of the year with businesses offering numerous specials or “door busters” for specific time periods. Inevitably, there is always a news broadcast depicting long lines, chaos and often violence as shoppers come to blows in their quest to take advantage of the low prices.

There was also another “Black Friday” thousands of years ago when chaos and violence ruled. On that day there was darkness over all the land, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom, the earth quaked, rocks split and graves were opened. It was the day Jesus Christ died on the Cross of Calvary for the sins of the world.

His seemingly hopeless cry of, “it is finished,” was in actuality a cry of victory – a declaration that God’s plan to redeem sinful man was completed. Little did those witnessing the death of Jesus realize that “Black Friday” set the stage for a “Joyful Sunday” when an empty tomb would be discovered and the cry of, “He has risen,” would reverberate through time, history and the hearts of mankind forever.

Every time I hear the term “Black Friday” I am reminded of that day so long ago that transferred our guilt to Jesus Christ and secured a place in Heaven for all who accept His sacrifice. And I am so thankful for the Savior who was willing to die in my place!
