The Chatter Box

By Deborah Bennett

I can’t help but notice as I travel county roads, in particular, “my” road – West Old Savannah Road - that the litter along the highways is abundant!

I just don’t understand why folks can’t wait until they get to a trash dumpster or to their destination to dump their trash. Throwing it out the vehicle window is a crime! It’s called “littering.” A lot can be said for first impressions, and litter along our county highways does not make for a good one. It is also a crime!

Anyone caught littering in Georgia can be charged with a misdemeanor and, if found guilty, can be punished by a fine of not less than $100 and not more than $1,000. The law also allows the court to direct the violator to clean up the littered area and to publish the violator's name in the newspaper.

Although enforcing the law is the responsibility of law enforcement agencies, individuals can help by not becoming part of the problem. Don’t litter! Resist the temptation to roll the vehicle window down and throw out that bag of trash. Wait until you get to your home or until you see a trash dumpster!

Another good way to clean up our county is for those incarcerated to be put to work, with supervision, along the highways picking up the litter. I’ve witnessed this being done in the past and it made a difference. Let’s get it going again!

I taught my grandchildren to sing a little song when they were little whenever they saw trash beside the highway – “Litter bug, litter bug! Shame on you!” They still do it! It also implanted the idea that they should not litter into their minds.
