Bloodmobile to be here March 27

Shepeard Community Blood Center is hosting a blood drive at Optim Medical Center-Jenkins 1-6 p.m. Monday, March 27. As the provider of all blood and blood products to a number of area hospitals, Shepeard depends on the blood donations of local community members, like those in Millen, Perkins and the surrounding area.

It’s particularly crucial for O Negative and O Positive blood donors to roll up their sleeves. Shepeard has been in critical appeal for these specific blood types since the first part of January.

“It’s been especially hard to maintain an ample supply of O Negative and O Positivie blood this year,” says Suzanne Fanning, Shepeard’s Advertising and Communications Manager. “We’re seeing a local and national trend that our older, faithful donors (Baby Boomers) are starting to become deferred for a number of reasons including: health, travel, and the ever present military residence during the Mad Cow era, etc. On the flip side, younger generations, (Millennials and Gen X), tend to support causes that are large scale and social media driven. Unfortunately, the blood industry has not yet bridged the gap to create that strong sense of devotedly donating blood to help faceless patients.”

To meet the needs of local hospitals and critically ill patients, Shepeard must collect 144 units of blood each and every day. This is why community support and involvement is key in keeping the local blood supply strong. Those who have have never donated blood are encouraged to take the first step and donate on the bloodmobile at the hospital on March 27 from 1-6 p.m.

If you are healthy and well, weigh at least 110 pounds and are at least 17 years old, you are encouraged to come out to the blood drive and be someone’s hero by donating blood. If you are 16 years old, you may donate with a signed parental consent form. All donors will receive a free Shepeard t-shirt, free health screening and post-donation refreshments. Please don’t forget to bring your Shepeard Blood Donor Card or picture ID, when coming to donate.

Shepeard would also like to publicly acknowledge the 26 who came out to donate blood during our last blood drive in January. Sixteen life-saving units of blood were collected, saving 48 local lives!
