The Chatter Box

By Deborah Bennett

The need for additional parking at the Jenkins County Courthouse, especially on days that court is in session, has been a topic of discussion during recent meetings of the Jenkins County Commissioners. A possible solution being considered is using the vacant lot where the old Soc Station was located as a parking lot.

The City of Millen took possession of the lot in 2009. Plans for construction of a Visitor’s Center, vending areas, green space and parking lot were developed with the city receiving a National Scenic By-ways federal grant for that purpose in 2012. Unfortunately, the City lost that grant due to the fact that two environmental studies that had previously been completed could not be used. An additional environmental study was deemed necessary, and there was not sufficient time to perform one before the grant expired. There was no provision for an extension of the grant.

It would be great if the city and county could work together to develop the Soc Station site into a parking lot, not only for courthouse visitors, but also for patrons of the U.S. Post Office, which also has very limited parking.

The courthouse and post office are two of our busiest sites. The Soc site could provide additional parking for both.
