Josh Dong named Valedictorian, Jacob Nelson named Salutatorian

(Staff photo by Deborah Bennett) Top honors of the 2017 graduating class of Jenkins County High School go to Josh Dong, Valedictorian, and Jacob William Nelson, Salutatorian. Josh is the son of Mao Xiong Dong and Nian Yue Lin. Jacob is the son of Charly and Terry Nelson.

During his high school career, Josh has received Academic Achievement Awards in Spanish, Social Studies, Science, Math and Language Arts. He is the recipient of the Millen Rotary Club Scholastic Scholar Award and the Georgia Certificate of Merit Award. He also participated in the GA-12 Youth Leadership Summit. Josh plans to pursue a degree in Nuclear Engineering, attending Georgia Southern University and then transferring to Georgia Technical College upon graduation. He hopes to be able to benefit the community and even the environment as a nuclear engineer.

Jacob has achieved multiple notable accomplishments over his high school career. Some of those which he considers most important are the Georgia Merit and Zell Miller scholarships, Beta and Rotary club memberships, the MOWR program, and STAR student. The one that he values the most is his status as Salutatorian. Jacob plans to major in Accounting in college. Upon graduation, his goal is to work for a large corporation as their accountant on retainer. As a smaller side goal, he would like to own a very luxurious vehicle one day.
