The Chatter Box

By Deborah Bennett

School is out for the summer and my grandchildren are ecstatic! They are already planning all of the things they want to do. Most of them involve water – swimming, fishing, going to the beach, Magnolia Springs Splash Pad, etc.

I can still remember how excited I was about getting out of school for the summer when I was a child. The only difference is that we really did get out for the ENTIRE summer – June, July, and August. September was the month we went back – after Labor Day.

We had three months of bliss with nothing to do but whatever our parents would allow us to do or whatever we didn’t get caught doing that we weren’t supposed to do.

There weren’t many planned activities for kids back then. We just relied upon our imaginations and sky was the limit. I can recall playing ball on a vacant lot on the Thomson Company property, roaming the neighborhood looking for plums and blackberries, playing under sprinklers, going to Magnolia Springs State Park pool or Franklin’s pool on Hwy. 25, spending the night with friends, skateboarding on Dixie Crescent Drive, riding my bicycle through the neighborhood at least a thousand times, going to Vacation Bible School, spending Saturdays at the Pal Theater and not going home until it was dark outside.

I am sure those things seem tame and boring to kids nowadays, but there is something to be said for the “good old days.” Things moved slower, including time, and having fun was not dependent upon how much money you had or what you had to play with.

We made our fun and had fun doing it!

Happy birthday this week to: Cecelia Bragg Howell, Jon Weathersby, Johnny Wilson, George Dudley, Lanie Fagler, Rev. Butch Taylor, Ellis Miller, John Troisi, Stewart Rackley, Mildred Bell, and Tori Smith.
