The Chatter Box

By Deborah Bennett

Sunday, June 4th, marked the seventh anniversary of the death of my mother, Martha Robbins, at the age of 80. In one way it doesn’t seem that long ago and in another it seems like she has been gone forever. I’m sure it’s like that for many who have lost loved ones.

A lot of my memories of her are so vivid and real that it seems like they occurred only yesterday. But so many days that have passed by since she died that it makes it seems like she has been gone an eternity!

One of my most vivid memories is of an incident that occurred when I was around 13-14 years old. We awoke one night to the sound of clanging and banging in the kitchen. Mama, and I, thought someone was breaking down the back door. I can still see Mama creeping into the kitchen in her gown and hair bonnet with a flashlight in her hand as a weapon. I was following close behind.

Upon reaching the kitchen, she turned on the light. The kitchen was empty, but the clanging and banging continued. It was coming from beneath the kitchen sink where the pots and pans were kept. Mama slowly opening the cabinet door and out ran the biggest rat I’ve ever seen with its tail caught in the mouse trap she had set several nights before. That is the only time I ever saw my Mama dance as it ran between her feet!

It was clear that the rat was too big for the trap and Mama chased it around the kitchen, beating at it with the flashlight. She finally subdued the rat and threw it, still attached to the trap, into the backyard. After all the ruckus was over, we both had a good laugh!

I still laugh when I remember that night. Miss you, Mama!

Happy birthday this week to: Debbie Richardson, Kimberly Godbee Bragg, Giner Lanier, Robert Pierce, Shirley Dwight, Trevor Weathersby, Susan D. Myers, Gayla Landing, Bryan and Weatherford.
