Optim Health System announced in April that its Jenkins medical center would close, merging services with the Optim Medical Center-Screven in Sylvania. The merger was to take effect June 24th. On May 26th, it was announced to hospital staff that there was a Letter of Intent for a possible purchase of the Jenkins facility.

"Throughout the difficult process of having to close our doors, conversations with potential buyers continued,” stated Bob Sellers, CEO of Optim’s Jenkins and Screven facilities. “Patient safety and quality care remained one of our highest priorities and we have worked closely with members of the county commission as we found a way to provide a future for the hospital.”

Mr. Sellers said that like many other rural hospitals, Optim Medical Center-Jenkins faced the ever-increasing battle of falling Medicare/Medicaid reimbursements, decreased patient activity, and needed costly infrastructure upgrades, resulting in the April 25th announcement of merging services with a nearby medical center and June 24th closure. Jenkins would have been the seventh hospital in Georgia since 2013 to announce its closure.

“We appreciate Optim involving us in the process and tirelessly working to identify and find potential buyers that will allow for capital improvements and continuation of services,” said Jerry Henry, Jenkins County Board of Commissioners Chairman.

Optim Health System and GA Medical Holdings, Corp. worked diligently to facilitate this transaction. The June 16th transfer of ownership allows the Jenkins County hospital to maintain uninterrupted daily operations and ensures a fluid transition for staff, employees, and patients. The hospital’s emergency department will remain open and available to the community.

Further, all Jenkins medical records will remain at the Jenkins facility. Patients who wish to obtain a copy of their medical records may contact the facility at 478-982-4221, Monday – Friday from 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. or go to the Jenkins facility located at 931 East Winthrope Avenue, Millen, GA 30442.

“We are committed to continuing to provide the highest quality care,” stated Earl Whiteley, Jenkins County Medical Center Interim Administrator / COO. “Serving the residents of Jenkins County and partnering with the community.”
