This Date in 1948

It was revealed this week that the local telephone exchange area now boasts of more than 950 connected telephones in Millen and Jenkins County. Very shortly, the 1,000th telephone will be installed out in the Horse Creek area of the county, with appropriate ceremony.

Sidney Bragg, 19-year-old farmer of Screven County, was killed Saturday night in an automobile accident just within the city limits of Millen on the Sylvania Road. Officers investigating the accident said the car overturned several times and Mr. Bragg was thrown clear of the wreck and instantly died.

The new garage building of the Mays Auto Company is about completed, according to G.J. Mays Jr., owner.

Work on the Millen/Sardis Highway is being pushed to the utmost, according to Jack Crowell of the Crowell Construction Company. Under the Federal Bureau of Public Roads, it is necessary that all asphalt work be completed by Oct. 15th because there is no prohibition against placing concrete except during freezing weather.

Farmers Hardware and Furniture Company advertises the new Jordon 10/4 2-temperature refrigerator with a normal refrigeration room and a freezer locker.

A 16-year-old blue-eyed blonde, Sara Kate Chew of Millen won the title of Miss Georgia State Parks in a bathing beauty contest Aug. 28th at Jekyll Island. Miss Chew represented Magnolia Springs State Park in Millen. Five thousand visitors were on hand for the event with 21 girls competing.
