The Chatter Box

By Deborah Bennett

I jokingly tell my grandchildren that I don’t have a “mailbox” that it is a “bill box” because that is all I ever get in it. But, the truth is that I also get a lot of sales papers, junk mail, and occasionally, an important correspondence. The mailbox is the receptacle for a lot of communications sent to me. I just have to sort the things I receive according to their importance, keeping what is important and tossing into the trash the things that are not.

Our minds can also be like a mailbox. It is the receptacle that holds the many thoughts that flow through our consciousness. Those thoughts are generated by many different sources – our environment, what we’re doing, what we see, hear or smell, and how we are feeling, etc.

We need to guard our thoughts. And just like the items we receive in our mailboxes, we need to “sort” them and discard those that are inappropriate, malicious or not important. Why, because our thoughts often dictate our actions and our actions dictate our character. If we allow negative, harmful thoughts to fill our minds, then our actions will soon follow and our character will suffer the consequences.

I can’t help but think that this is cause of so many things happening in our world today. People are not guarding their thoughts. They are harboring hatred, prejudice, malice, violence, revenge, vindictiveness and other negative thoughts in their minds. And, after awhile, they begin to act on them. What a different world we would live in if our thoughts were filled with love, kindness, hope, joy, peace, compassion, etc.

Just something to think about!
