The Chatter Box

By Deborah Bennett

There are no words to describe the devastation that hit Houston, Texas and other nearby areas of our nation last week in the form of Hurricane Harvey.

The images broadcast by national news media of the horrific flooding and damage was hard to watch, bringing back memories of Hurricane Katrina which struck Louisiana almost 10 years ago. So many people lost everything they owned, escaping the flood waters with only the clothes on their backs.

But, there were also images of first responders and so many ordinary citizens who stepped up to become rescuers of neighbors, friends and strangers – earning the title of “hero.” They risked their own lives to help the helpless and saved many lives. Thousands were plucked from the flood waters and taken to safety!

Weather forecasters indicate that the 50+ inches of rain that fell within a 3-4 day period is the most rainfall recorded in our nation’s history! And Hurricane Harvey is predicted to be the most costly hurricane to hit the country doing billions of dollars in damage.

Recovery from this storm will take a long time. But it will come. We are a nation that perseveres, a nation that never gives up. Those who lost everything will find a way to rebuild their lives and will come through the tragedy even stronger than they were before.

For those who want to help, making monetary donations to the American Red Cross is the best way to do it. You may donate by going to the website www.redcross.org, mailing a check to American Red Cross, PO Box 37839, Boone, IA 50037-0938, or by calling 1-800-435-7669.

Also, keep the victims in your prayers!
