This Date in 1958

Local contractors were advised late Monday that bids due to be opened on that date for the construction of a swimming pool at the Magnolia Springs State Park would be postponed until Sept. 16th at 2 p.m. due to the lateness in getting approved plans ready for the construction. The pool is to measure 42 ft. x 96 ft. in overall length. The location of the pool has not yet been determined.

Southern Bells’ Chief Operator here, Mrs. Myrtle S. Franklin, will observe the 35th anniversary of her telephone career on Sept. 15th. Her entire career has been here in Millen.

Jenkins County ginners reports that a total of 1,565 bales of cotton have been ginned prior to Sept. 1st. A total of 1,928 bales were ginned for the same period in 1957. This shows a loss of 363 bales.

Planters E.M.C. advertises “electric heat that can’t be beat” with “Willie Wiredhand.”

Announcement is made of the opening of West Millen Grocery, operated by Katie Lewis. It will be located in McMillan Building.
